Australian study shows simple community program can prevent weight gain in women |
Media Release - 13 July 2010:
A simple community program has been shown to be effective in preventing excess weight gain commonly experienced by young mothers. The research, published online today in the British Medical Journal at bmj.com has found that weight gain can be prevented with a program based on simple health messages, small changes to behaviour, and delivered conveniently in a community setting.

Half of Australia’s population are over a healthy weight, increasing their risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and some cancers.
Obesity also affects our immune systems, creating ‘pro-inflammatory’ immune cells that circulate in the blood and attack the body. Pro-inflammatory immune cells also promote coronary artery disease.

We all know that calcium is important for children's growing bones, but what about for older people? According to Osteoporosis Australia, older Australians aged 60 and over are the worst age group at meeting their recommended daily calcium requirements, with only 8% meeting the target of three serves of dairy a day.

Menopause can seem like a scary time for some women.
When we see menopause portrayed in the media or popular culture, such as in the recent movie Sex and the City 2, it's often in a negative light with women depicted as slaves to their hormones.
It's important to remember that menopause is an individual experience and not all women will experience menopause symptoms. At the same time a woman goes through menopause there may be other things going on in her life, such as changing family relationships and / or work roles as well as new experiences taking place.
