Dr Zohra Lassi

Dr Zohra Lassi is a perinatal epidemiologist, recognised internationally for her work in maternal and child health and nutrition, particularly in low and middle-income countries. She has published over 100 peer-reviewed papers, including publications in The Lancet, PLoS Medicine and Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews. Her expertise in evidence synthesis and maternal, child, and adolescent health and nutrition has also been recognised through invited membership of five separate Lancet Intervention Review Groups and subsequent publications. Her work with community health workers and outreach services has contributed significantly to global integrated maternal and newborn outreach policies and guidelines.
Dr Lassi's research interests includes reproductive, maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health and nutrition, particularly in marginalised and low-resourced settings.

What are you planning to do/have done with your fellowship and how it will help your career?
Jean Hailes Travel Fellowship funds helped me to attend a Nutrition Reviews Meeting at the Peter Gilgan Centre for Research and Learning at the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) in Toronto, Canada. There I developed some collaborative projects on adolescent nutrition and, as a result, am leading three adolescent and child health nutrition papers that will simultaneously be published in the journals Campbell Systematic Reviews (Wiley) and Nutrients.
The meetings in Toronto also led to an invitation to attend a Lancet Working Group workshop on Optimising Child Health in Bellagio, Italy, in September 2019. During this workshop, I met child and adolescent health and nutrition experts from around the world.
Jean Hailes travel funds also helped me to attend the Women Deliver 2019 Conference in Vancouver, Canada, where I presented and discussed my research projects on improving adolescent Sexual and Reproductive health in Pakistan and Uganda (pilot phase in collaboration with Birthing Kit Foundation Australia) with leading experts in the field.
During this fellowship I will continue collaborating with the team in Canada and further develop some collaborative project(s) with adolescent health experts at the University of Melbourne.
