Some aspects of parenting can’t easily be imagined – especially the sheer number of hours that are involved in a baby’s care. Phrases like ‘giving up work to have a baby’ project misconceptions that child-rearing is not work. Some parents receive a real shock when they discover that their so-called ‘holiday’ from paid work doesn’t offer a lot of extra time to see friends, has no neat boundaries and is quite lonely. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal and metabolic condition that affects 12-18% of women of reproductive age in Australia and up to 21% in high risk groups. Despite the condition being so prevalent, up to 70% of women with PCOS are still undiagnosed. This alarming statistic has led to the development of a new national guideline that authors hope will lead to earlier diagnosis, greater understanding and awareness of PCOS by women and health practitioners, and better health outcomes. This article looks at the long-term health implications of PCOS and how successful management early in life offers the best outcomes for women.
