Trial of acupuncture for hot flushes (Acupause)

Interested in acupuncture for hot flushes?

So are we.

Background

Acupuncture

Hot flushes affect up to 75 per cent of women during the menopause, are often bothersome and may last for several years or more. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is an effective treatment but carries a small risk of potentially serious side effects. Acupuncture is a relatively safe treatment and some small studies suggest it may help women with hot flushes.

We are looking for post-menopausal women who have not had any needle acupuncture in the past two years to participate in a clinical study on acupuncture for hot flushes (the “Acupause” study).

If you...

  • Are aged 40 years or older,
  • Have regular hot flushes,
  • Did not experience menopausal as a result of surgery, radiotherapy or chemotherapy,
  • Have not started any treatment for hot flushes within the past 12 weeks,
  • Are not taking hormone replacement therapy,
  • Live in Victoria (see locations below), near Ballina in New South Wales or in Southport (Gold Coast) in Queensland

... you may be eligible to participate.

Level of involvement:

  • Acupuncture treatments (either "real" or "placebo") are provided FREE of charge by experienced acupuncturists located in Melbourne CBD, Malvern, St Kilda, Bentleigh, Coburg, Mount Waverley, Rosanna, Bundoora, Ringwood, Mornington, Melton and Echuca in Victoria; in Ballina and Byron Bay in NSW, and in Southport (Gold Coast) in Queensland.
  • Treatments last for 30 minutes at a time, except for the first treatment, which lasts 45 minutes.
  • Treatments are given over 8 weeks (during which time no new treatments for hot flushes can be taken).
  • Interview with Dr Carolyn Ee, a medical doctor and acupuncturist (women living outside of the Greater Melbourne area will have a phone interview with Dr Ee and a brief interview with their practitioner before commencing treatment).
  • Keeping a hot flush diary (over 7 days) and answering short questionnaires before, during and at 3 and 6 months after finishing treatment.
