Detecting Prediabetes, Diabetes and its Complications
Recruitment Closed
The Department of Diabetes at Southern Health are looking for volunteers aged 50 to 75 to participate in an important research project looking at prediabetes, diabetes and blood vessel or vascular complications.
Those with diabetes or prediabetes are more likely to develop blood vessel or vascular complications. These are due to narrowings in blood vessels that reduce blood flow to the heart, brain and legs. This can lead to heart attacks, strokes and problems with circulation in the legs.
We are seeking volunteers who are:
1. Healthy (or have pre-diabetes) and not on any medications for pre-diabetes, and/or
2. Are overweight or have a family history of type 2 diabetes
Comprehensive testing over two days will include:
- Non-invasive ultrasound tests
- Blood tests that assess the presence and severity of diabetes, as well as new markers of blood vessel damage
- A 24-hour blood pressure monitor
- An optional test, involving a small skin biopsy
