Australia Day honours 2009
Internationally-renowned gynaecologist and menopause expert, Dr Elizabeth Farrell will be recognised in Monday’s Australia Day Honours.
A founding board member of the Jean Hailes Foundation for Women’s Health, as well as president of the Asia Pacific Menopause Federation for the triennium 2007-2010 and president elect of the Australasian Menopause Society among many other roles, Dr Farrell leads the way in her groundbreaking approach to the health and wellbeing of women.
An inspirational speaker on women’s health issues and passionate about helping women age as well as they can, she is particularly keen on improving access to quality health care and health information for women living in rural areas.
Dr Farrell will be appointed as a Member in the General Division of the Order of Australia, “for service to medicine in the field of women’s health, particularly obstetrics and gynaecology through research, clinical practice, education and administrative roles and as a contributor to a range of professional organisations”.
“I am very humbled to receive this honour,” said Dr Farrell. “It gives me such pleasure to work alongside my fellow health professionals who share my interests and passions in this field, as well as the pleasure I get from the many wonderful women I am priveleged to work with every day.”
Jean Hailes Foundation for Women’s Health Director Janet Michelmore AO said the Foundation was immensely proud of Dr Farrell. “This award recognises her many years of dynamic service in women’s health. She is to be commended for her unwavering support for women, and their health and wellbeing as they age and her determination to provide reliable, authoritative and accessible information to women across Australia.”
Dr Farrell’s previous awards include an inaugural Australian Health Media Award in 2006 and the prestigious science-based Avon Spirit of Achievement Award in 1998.
