2008 Sep 25 - National health experts talk midlife and menopause Print E-mail

Hot flushes, night sweats, irritability, loss of libido, headaches, fatigue… for some women, hitting menopause may seem like a rollercoaster of physical and emotional changes.

Melbourne women have the opportunity to hear leading experts speak about midlife women’s health on Sunday October 12 at the Sofitel Hotel.

National organisation the Jean Hailes Foundation for Women’s Health has joined with the Australasian Menopause Society (AMS) in this initiative aimed at updating Melbourne women on the latest in midlife health and wellbeing.

Women will hear hear relevant, reliable and researched information on midlife as well as a range of practical tips. Speakers will discuss treatment choices for menopause symptoms including herbal and hormone therapies, and self-management strategies, including healthy eating, physical activity and emotional health.

AMS President-elect and Jean Hailes gynaecologist, Dr Elizabeth Farrell will update women on the latest evidence-based information on options for menopause symptoms, as well as discussing other midlife health issues. “It is important for women to have the opportunity to explore their health options so that they can think about their own needs and what is right for them,” says Dr Farrell.

Jean Hailes psychologist and AMS member, Dr Mandy Deeks is a passionate speaker on women’s health. “Remember, this is your life and only you are in control of it,” she says. “We are very complex beings and there are many influences on our lives, especially our physical and emotional wellbeing.”

Jean Hailes dietitian Ms Cate Lombard will talk about healthy eating and physical activity at midlife. “There is so much we can do for ourselves to ensure we are in good health,” says Miss Lombard. “Making small, sustainable changes to the way we eat will improve our general health and quality of life.”
