Women’s health was firmly on the agenda last week in Longreach, with 130 women and 26 health professionals registered to learn more about ageing well issues at two separate events.
North & West Queensland Primary Health Care partnered with national organisation the Jean Hailes Foundation for Women’s Health to bring these events to Longreach. Gynaecologist Dr Elizabeth Farrell and naturopath Sandra Villella talked about a range of information relevant to healthy ageing, including both traditional and complementary options. Local mobile women’s health nurse Louise Cameron talked about available health services, encouraging women and their families to access local services. Many of these services were represented in an expo event held on the day.
Jean Hailes CEO Jenny Jackson was impressed with the enthusiasm that saw women travel from as far away as Tambo, Blackall and Barcaldine on a community bus to attend Saturday’s event. “The level of community spirit and engagement here is extraordinary,” she said. “I personally spoke with two women who drove 280 and 250 kms to be here.”
“We are delighted to have had the opportunity to work with NWQPHC to bring health education to women and health professionals in the area. This community already puts healthy ageing messages into action by understanding the importance of staying connected through various networks and groups.”
While in town Ms Jackson met with Longreach Mayor John Palmer, as well as local health workers to consider on ways the Foundation could further support women in Longreach and the surrounding area.
“We also want to let women and health professionals know that even if they couldn’t attend the events last week, there is a vast range of health information that they access free from the Foundation,” said Ms Jackson. “We can send out fact sheets on healthy ageing, midlife and menopause, perimenopause or a range of other health issues including heart disease, diabetes or bowel and bladder health. We also have a free health magazine you can subscribe to, a comprehensive website www.jeanhailes.org.au and online learning opportunities for health professionals.”
