Osteoporosis Women's Health Update Print E-mail

It is estimated that nearly 2 million Australians currently have an osteoporosis related condition of which three quarters are women. Osteoporosis currently affects approximately 10% of the Australian population.

There is general concern that the prevalence of osteoporosis is only likely to increase over the next few years due to the fact that life expectancy of average Australians is increasing.

Presenters 

Prof Peter EbelingProfessor Peter Ebeling, Professor of Medicine, Head of Endocrinology, Department of Medicine, (RMH/WH) / Western Hospital, University of Melbourne.

Throughout his career Professor Ebeling has focused on metabolic bone diseases such as osteoporosis and particularly their link with Vitamin D deficiency.

Professor Ebeling is co-chair of the Australian Musculoskeletal Quality Improvement Programme and was previously president of the Australian and New Zealand Bone and Mineral Society. He is regularly asked to speak at international and national scientific meetings. Professor Ebeling is also chairman of the Victorian State Committee of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. 

Assoc Prof Robin DalyDr Robin Daly, PhD, Associate Professor / Principal Scientist, Department of Medicine, Western Hospital, University of Melbourne.

Associate Professor Robin Daly has conducted extensive research into osteoporosis prevention particularly looking at the effects of nutrition and exercise. He has also published over 100 scientific papers and has been invited to present at a number of international scientific conferences and forums in the USA, Canada, Sweden and Finland.

Topics include:

  • Why osteoporosis is an under-diagnosed and under-treated public health problem and how health practitioners can change this.
  • Learn about the latest in management options- current and potential therapies.
  • The relationship between osteonecrosis of the jaw and bisphosphonates.
  • Learn about the latest evidence-based information regarding prevention of osteoporotic fractures.
