Whoever wrote the words ‘life begins at 40' surely didn't mean hot flushes, night sweats, irritability and other unpleasant symptoms associated with women at menopause.
Women in Darwin and surrounding areas have the opportunity to hear leading experts speak on midlife women's health on the evening of Friday August 10 at the Travelodge Mirambeena Resort.
National organisation the Jean Hailes Foundation for Women's Health has joined with Family Planning Welfare Association of NT in this initiative aimed at educating Territory women on midlife women's health. Women attending can expect to hear relevant, reliable and researched information and practical tips about midlife, including menopause, treatment choices for symptoms including herbal and hormone therapies and a range of strategies for women to help themselves, including healthy eating, physical activity and emotional health.
"It's great having a range of expert speakers who are passionate about the wellbeing of women in midlife coming to Darwin," says Family Planning Welfare NT CEO Robyn Wardle. "We support this event in the hope that local community women will attend if they are seeking answers and knowledge."
Speakers from the Jean Hailes Foundation for Women's Health include gynaecologist Dr Elizabeth Farrell, psychologist Dr Mandy Deeks and naturopath Ms Sandra Villella. Speakers will also update local health professionals, in conjunction with the Top End Division of General Practice, on menopause, midlife and libido.
Dr Deeks has this advice for women facing midlife: "Remember, this is your life and only you are in control of it," she says. "We are very complex beings and there are many influences on our lives, especially our physical and emotional wellbeing."
Bookings for the community event can be made by calling Gloria on 08 8948 0144. Cost of entry is a gold coin, payable at the door.
